Described herein is a process of administering an ANF alone or in combination with Epo such that the ANF potentiates the activity of Epo and causes production of the erythroid progenitors BFU-E and CFU-E. Claims of the invention include the generation of red blood cells at a higher level than if Epo alone is present in the blood stream.
