Title:Treatment of viral infections
Inventors:Sommadossi, Jean-Pierre; Birmingham, AL, USA
el Kouni, Mahmoud H.; Providence, RI, USA
Summary:This invention introduces an antiviral composition comprised of a pyrimidine nucleoside analogue and a uridine phosphorylase inhibitor. Described herein are methods of treating viral infections via the utilization of uridine which has been found to selectively protect and rescue uninfected cells, such as human bone marrow progenitor cells, from the toxicity of pyrimidine nucleoside analogues during the treatment of retroviral diseases, such as AIDS. Further provided are methods by which uridine phophorylase inhibitors are effective in maintaining the necessary levels of uridine within such cells. Therapeutic applications are included for the protection against nucleoside toxicity in non-infected cells in the treatment of AIDS-type diseases by which a pyrimidine nucleoside analogue and a uridine phosphorylase inhibitor are co-administered either simultaneously or sequentially to treat the viral infections and to protect or rescue uninfected cells in the afflicted subject.
