Title:Homogeneous mammalian hematopoietic stem cell composition
Inventors:Weissman, Irving L.; Stanford, CA, USA

Summary:Described herein are mammalian hematopoietic stem cell compositions and methods for their use in the production of dedicated blood cells. The invention relates to highly concentrated hematopoietic stem cell compositions that are substantially free of differentiated or dedicated hematopoietic cells and which are obtained by the subtraction of cells having particular markers from a sample and the selection of cells having other markers. Therapeutic applications are included for the use of such compositions as a source of individual hematopoietic lineages or groups thereof, for the reconstitution of stem cells in a host, and as assays for the identification of a wide variety of hematopoietic growth factors. This invention represents a continuation of other applications filed by the same inventors.
Abstract:Highly concentrated hematopoietic stem cell compositions are provided which are substantially free of differentiated or dedicated hematopoietic cells. The cells are obtained by subtraction of cells having particular markers and selection of cells having particular markers. The resulting composition may be used to provide for individual or groups of hematopoietic lineages, to reconstitute stem cells of the host, and to identify an assay for a wide variety of hematopoietic growth factors.
