Hilton, Douglas J.; Warrandyte, Australia | Summary: | This invention describes methods for the use of leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) in the maintenance and derivation of embryonic stem (ES) cells in culture. Described herein are ES cells that are maintained and derived from mammalian embryos after having been cultured in a medium containing an effective amount of LIF for a suitable time and under conditions sufficient to maintain the ES cells which may then be passaged in LIF and used to make chimaeric animals. Therapeutic applications are provided for a variety of human diseases and disorders. | Abstract: | The present invention relates generally to the use of leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) in the maintenance and derivation of embryonic stem (ES) cells in culture. The ES cells are maintained and/or derived from animal embryos by culturing said cells or embryos in a culture medium containing an effective amount of LIF for a time and under conditions sufficient to maintain and/or derive said ES cells. The ES cells may be passaged in LIF and used to make chimaeric animals. | US Patent Website: | Click Here for Full Text of Patent | Title Number: | US5166065 | Application Number: | US1990000477960 | Date Filed: | 31/05/1990 | Date Published: | 24/11/1992 | Assignee: | Amrad Corporation Limited, Kew, Australia |
