Stem Cell Related Patent Number US5338839

Title:DNA encoding nestin protein
Inventors:McKay, Ronald D. G.; Brookline, MA, USA
Lendahl, Urban; Stockholm, Sweden
Summary:This invention presents nucleotide and protein sequences for human and rat nestin. Described herein are properties of the nestin protein, the expression of which distinguishes neural multipotent stem cells and brain tumor cells from the more differentiated neural cell types such as neuronal, glial and muscle cells. Further disclosed are methods by which the isolated DNA encoding the nestin protein hybridizes to a different DNA sequence under high stringency conditions. Therapeutic applications are included for the use of this protein in the diagnosis of brain tumors.
Abstract:A gene (SEQ ID NO: 1 or SEQ ID NO: 3) encoding a protein, nestin, whose expression distinguishes neural multipotential stem cells and brain tumor cells from the more differentiated neural cell types (e.g., neuronal, glial and muscle cells).
