The invention relates to methods by which cells that are obtained from ventral mesencephalon tissue from a mammalian embryo are then isolated and proliferated in vitro to produce a culture which differentiates into dopamine-producing cells. Products of the invention include cultures containing neural progenitor cells, preferably grown as aggregates in suspension. Further disclosed are methods by which ventral mesencephalon tissue is obtained from a donor at appropriate stages of embryonic development, after which the tissue is dissociated to obtain single cells and small cell clusters for the culturing of the neural progenitor cells.
