The invention addresses the problem of recovery after the administration of high-dose chemotherapy to cancer patients. Disclosed herein is a process for the ex vivo expansion of peripheral blood progenitor cells wherein CD 34+ cells are enriched and cultivated in a medium comprising IL-1, IL-3, IL-6, EPO and SCF. Claims of the invention include the generation of cells of high clonogenic potential which have the capacity to expedite recovery from chemotherapy in cancer patients.
