Summary:Described herein is a system for inhibiting the growth of hematopoietic stem cells in a mammal via the administration of a stem cell inhibitory protein that is free from other proteins. The invention relates to methods and materials for protecting the cycling or dividing of stem cells from the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic agents and radiation via the administration of such a stem cell inhibitory factor in a suitable composition prior to exposure to these agents. Properties and associated methods of the stem cell inhibitory factor are disclosed herein. Therapeutic applications are directed toward the treatment of patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.
Abstract:The present invention discloses a method for protecting cycling or dividing stem cells from the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic agents and radiation by administering prior to exposure to these agents, an effective amount of Stem Cell Inhibitory Factor as well as a composition useful therefore.
