The invention relates to methods and materials for protecting the cycling or dividing of stem cells from the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic agents and radiation via the administration of such a stem cell inhibitory factor in a suitable composition prior to exposure to these agents. Properties and associated methods of the stem cell inhibitory factor are disclosed herein.
