Title:Method for producing a highly enriched population of hematopoietic stem cells
Inventors:DiGiusto, David; Palo Alto, CA, USA
Galy, Anne; Palo Alto, CA, USA
Summary:Described herein is a method for producing a highly enriched population of hematopoietic stem cells. The invention relates to a process for isolating populations of hematopoietic cells enriched for stem cell activity according to whether or not they possess high CD34 cell surface antigen density (CD34hi). Therapeutic and experimental applications of CD34hi cell preparations are included for use in drug discovery, gene therapy, and for reconstituting hematopoiesis in a mammalian organism lacking a functioning hematopoietic system.
Abstract:The present invention provides a simple and reliable means for isolating populations of hematopoietic cells enriched for stem cell activity on the basis of possession of high CD34 cell surface antigen density (CD34hi). CD34.sup.hi cell preparations are useful, for example, for drug discovery efforts, for reconstituting hematopoiesis in an animal lacking a functioning hematopoietic system, and for gene therapies.
