Summary:Described herein is the Streptococcus pneumoniae MurD protein, and methods of its use in the screening of antibacterial drugs. The invention relates to isolated nucleic acid compounds encoding the MurD stem peptide biosynthetic gene of Streptococcus pneumoniae, as well as associated vectors by which heterologous host cells are transformed for expressing the MurD enzyme product. Further provided is a kit for identifying compounds that inhibit stem peptide biosynthesis. This invention represents a variation of other applications filed by the same assignee.
Abstract:The invention provides isolated nucleic acid compounds encoding the murD stem peptide biosynthetic gene of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Also provided are vectors and transformed heterologous host cells for expressing the MurD enzyme product and a method for identifying compounds that inhibit stem peptide biosynthesis.
