Stem Cell Related Patent Number US5770415

Title:Peptidoglycan biosynthetic gene mur a from Strepococcus pneumoniae
Inventors:Skatrud, Paul L.; Indianapolis, IN, USA
Peery, Robert B.; Brownsburg, IN, USA
Summary:This invention describes a new stem peptide biosynthesis enzyme MurA from Streptococcus pneumoniae, designated UDPGlcNAc enolpyruvyl transferase. Described herein are isolated nucleic acid compounds encoding the stem peptide biosynthetic gene MurA of Streptococcus pneumoniae, as well as vectors and transformed heterologous host cells for expressing the MurA enzyme product. Further disclosed is a method for identifying compounds that inhibit stem peptide biosynthesis, as are properties of the UDPGlcNAc enolpyruvyl transferase and therapeutic applications for its use in the screening of inhibitors which can be used as antibiotics. This invention represents a variation of other applications filed by the same assignee.
Abstract:The invention provides isolated nucleic acid compounds encoding the stem peptide biosynthetic gene murA of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Also provided are vectors and transformed heterologous host cells for expressing the MurA enzyme product and a method for identifying compounds that inhibit stem peptide biosynthesis.
