Title:Use of interferon .gamma. for the inhibition of proliferation and differentiation of primitive hematopoietic progenitor cells
Inventors:Berneman, Zwi; Antwerp, Belgium
Van Bockstaele, Dirk; Edegem, Belgium
Snoeck, Hans-Willem; Antwerp, Belgium
Summary:This invention describes a method of inhibiting the proliferation of primitive hematopoietic progenitor cells and hematopoietic stem cells, according to a process of incubating preparations containing the cells with IFN-?. Described herein is a method of promoting the survival of hematopoietic cells among a population of hematopoietic and tumor cells, by contacting the population of cells with an effective amount of at least one agent for purging the tumor cells in the presence of an effective amount of IFN-?, sufficient to inhibit the proliferation of CD34++CD38- cells, which is followed by a process of removing the IFN-? to reverse the inhibition of proliferation. Claims of the invention include the protection of cells during purging techniques using cytotoxic treatment, and during in vivo cytotoxic treatment. Therapeutic applications are included for patients receiving chemotherapy.
Abstract:The invention provides a method for inhibition of proliferation of primitive hematopoietic progenitor cells and hematopoietic stem cells, by incubating preparations containing said cells with IFN-.gamma.. The method is especially useful for protecting said cells during purging techniques using cytotoxic treatment, and for protection of said cells during in vivo cytotoxic treatment.
