Summary:This invention introduces the morphogenically active protein MOP-3, methods and uses thereof. Described herein are nucleic acid and amino acid sequences for MOP-3, methods for its production and expression in a biologically active form, and methods for its utilization in the induction of tissue morphogenesis in a mammal. Claims of the invention include the induction of endochondral bone formation in an in vivo assay, an increase in the progenitor cell population, and the ability of MOP-3 to stimulate progenitor cells to differentiate and maintain their differentiated phenotype both in vivo and in vitro. Therapeutic applications are included for inducing tissue-specific growth in vivo for the replacement of diseased or damaged tissue.
