Summary:This invention introduces a process for the in vitro expansion of non-immortalized hematopoietic CD34+ progenitor cells of erythroid lineage without simultaneous differentiation. Described herein are preparations of such erythroid lineage precursor cells that are grown in a medium containing a hormone and ligands for tyrosine kinase receptors, such that the non-immortalized progenitor cells are contacted with a combination of growth factors containing a glucocorticoid and an estrogen and at least one ligand of a tyrosine kinase receptor until the cells begin self-renewal. Therapeutic applications are included for the treatment of cancer, AIDS and anemia.
