Stem Cell Related Patent Number US5906934
Title: | Mesenchymal stem cells for cartilage repair | Inventors: | Grande, Daniel A.; Sea Cliff, NY, USA
Lucas, Paul A.; Macon, GA, USA | Summary: | Described herein are methods of growing new articular cartilage and subchondral bone via the administration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in a polymeric carrier to a site where new bone or cartilage is required. Central to the invention is the principle that MSCs in a polymeric carrier that are implanted into a cartilage or bone defect have been found to differentiate into cartilage or bone as appropriate. Disclosed herein are suitable polymeric carriers such as porous meshes or sponges formed of synthetic or natural polymers, as well as polymer solutions and a polyglycolic acid mesh. Therapeutic examples are given in the treatment of congenital as well as acquired cartilage defects. | Abstract: | It has been discovered that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in a polymeric carrier implanted into a cartilage and/or bone defect will differentiate to form cartilage and/or bone, as appropriate. Suitable polymeric carriers include porous meshes or sponges formed of synthetic or natural polymers, as well as polymer solutions. A presently preferred material is a polyglycolic acid mesh. | US Patent Website: | Click Here for Full Text of Patent | Title Number: | US5906934 | Application Number: | US1995000403640 | Date Filed: | 14/03/1995 | Date Published: | 25/05/1999 | Assignee: | MorphoGen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., New York, NY, USA
