Summary:Described herein is a Streptococcus pneumoniae muri protein, methods and uses thereof. The invention relates to isolated nucleic acid compounds encoding the stem peptide biosynthetic gene muri of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Further disclosed are properties of vectors and transformed heterologous host cells for expressing the Muri enzyme product, as well as a method for identifying compounds that inhibit stem peptide biosynthesis. Therapeutic and experimental applications are included for antibacterial drug screening.
