Title:Methods for enhancing angiogenesis with endothelial progenitor cells
Inventors:Isner, Jeffrey M.; Weston, MA, USA
Asahara, Takayuki; Arlington, MA, USA
Summary:This invention introduces methods of using endothelial progenitor cells for the therapeutic regulation of angiogenesis. Described herein are processes by which endothelial progenitor cells may be utilized either to enhance or inhibit angiogenesis and to deliver an angiogenesis modulator such as anti- or pro-angiogenic agents. Specific therapeutic examples are included for inducing the re-endothelialization of an injured blood vessel, for reducing restenosis by indirectly inhibiting smooth muscle cell proliferation, for either enhancing or inhibiting blood vessel formation at targeted sites of pathologic or utilitarian angiogenesis, and for the detection of ischemic tissue and the treatment of tumors of ischemia.
