Stem Cell Related Patent Number US6033906

Title:Methods for differentiating neural stem cells to glial cells using neuregulins
Inventors:Anderson, David J.; Altadena, CA, USA
Summary:Described herein are methods and materials associated with the differentiation of glial cells produced from neural stem cells that have been cultured with a neuregulin. The invention relates to a process by which populations of mammalian glial cells are produced from contacting at least one mammalian neural stem cell with a culture medium containing a neuregulin. Further disclosed are methods for detecting the differentiation of the stem cells into populations of glial cells. Also provided are properties of the neuregulin, which is identified herein as a ligand for a receptor selected from the group consisting of p185erbB2 and p180erbB4. Therapeutic applications in the treatment of neurological disorders are provided.
Abstract:Method for producing a population of mammalian glial cells comprising contacting at least one mammalian neural stem cell with a culture medium containing a neuregulin and detecting the differentiation of stem cell to a population of glial cells.
