Summary:Described herein are novel isolated liver cell clusters of less than ten cells comprised of a liver stem cell and a hepatocyte. The invention relates to a primary liver stem cell and a cell doublet consisting of a hepatocyte and the stem cell, both of which are derived from normal liver tissue. Further disclosed are methods by which the cells are isolated and genetically altered and transplanted. Therapeutic applications in liver transplantation, gene therapy and in extracorporeal liver assistance devices are included.
Abstract:The invention provides a primary liver stem cell and a cell doublet consisting of a hepatocyte and the stem cell, both of which are derived from normal liver tissue. Methods of isolating the cells, genetically altering the cells, and using the cells for transplantation are also within the invention.
