Stem Cell Related Patent Number US6165783

Title:Erythropoietin-mediated neurogenesis
Inventors:Weiss, Samuel; Calgary, Canada
Sorokan, S. Todd; Victoria, Canada
Summary:Described herein are methods of producing neurons from a population of neural cells containing at least one multipotent stem cell. The invention relates to the production of neurons or neuronal progenitor cells, such that multipotent neural stem cells are proliferated in the presence of growth factors and erythropoietin which induces the generation of neuronal progenitor cells. Further described are techniques by which the erythropoietin may be exogenously applied to the multipotent neural stem cells, or subjected to hypoxic insult which induces the cells to express erythropoietin. Therapeutic applications in the treatment of neurological diseases are included.
Abstract:Methods are described for the production of neurons or neuronal progenitor cells. Multipotent neural stem cells are proliferated in the presence of growth factors and erythropoietin which induces the generation of neuronal progenitor cells. The erythropoietin may be exogenously applied to the multipotent neural stem cells, or alternatively, the cells can be subjected to hypoxic insult which induces the cells to express erythropoietin.
