Stem Cell Related Patent Number US6184035
Title: | Methods for isolation and activation of, and control of differentiation from, skeletal muscle stem or progenitor cells | Inventors: | Csete, Marie; South Pasadena, CA, USA
Doyle, John; South Pasadena, CA, USA
Wold, Barbara; San Marino, CA, USA | Summary: | This invention describes accelerated methods of isolating, maintaining and enriching stem or progenitor cells derived from various organ or tissue sources under controlled environmental conditions at subatmospheric oxygen levels. Also provided are methods by which the precise oxygen levels may be determined empirically and/or by reference to physiologic levels within intact functioning organs or tissue. In one embodiment of the invention, the culturing of skeletal muscle progenitor cells is accomplished in less than 12% oxygen conditions or under 1% oxygen level. The invention relates to a starting cell that is a skeletal muscle or skeletal muscle progenitor cell from which accelerated differentiation is initiated in an environment of reduced oxygen. Therapeutic applications in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders are included. | Abstract: | The present invention provides a method of isolating, maintaining, and/or enriching for stem or progenitor cells derived from diverse organ or tissue sources. The invention specifically teaches that these can be accomplished by the controlled use of subatmospheric oxygen culture, and that the precise oxygen level or levels must be determined empirically and/or by reference to physiologic levels within intact functioning organ or tissue. In particular, culturing skeletal muscle progenitor cells in less than 12% oxygen conditions or under 1% oxygen level. | US Patent Website: | Click Here for Full Text of Patent | Title Number: | US6184035 | Application Number: | US1998000195569 | Date Filed: | 18/11/1998 | Date Published: | 06/02/2001 | Assignee: | California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, USA |
