Further described is an isolated DNA sequence and methods of its use in securing expression in a procaryotic or eukaryotic host cell of a polypeptide product having a sufficiently duplicative amino acid sequence of that in the naturally-occurring non-human stem cell factor as to allow possession of the hematopoietic biological activity of the naturally occurring stem cell factor. Specific DNA sequences are provided, as are pharmaceutical compositions and therapeutic applications in the treatment of blood disorders.
