Stem Cell Related Patent Number US6214369

Title:Mesenchymal stem cells for cartilage repair
Inventors:Grande, Daniel A.; Sea Cliff, NY, USA
Lucas, Paul A.; Macon, GA, USA
Summary:Described herein are methods of growing new cartilage and bone via the administration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in a polymeric carrier to a site where new bone or cartilage is required. Further disclosed are suitable polymeric carriers which include porous meshes or sponges formed of synthetic or natural polymers, as well as polymer solutions and a preferred polyglycolic acid mesh material. Therapeutic applications in the treatment and correction of congenital or acquired cartilage defects are included.
Abstract:It has been discovered that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in a polymeric carrier implanted into a cartilage and/or bone defect will differentiate to form cartilage and/or bone, as appropriate. Suitable polymeric carriers include porous meshes or sponges formed of synthetic or natural polymers, as well as polymer solutions. A presently preferred material is a polyglycolic acid mesh.
