Summary:Described herein are methods and materials for maintaining mammalian hematopoietic progenitor cells in vitro, and modulating the survival and differentiation of mammalian hematopoietic progenitor cells via a process of maintaining the cells in a nutritive medium containing a placental glycoprotein hormone of the murine prolactin family, namely, either murine prolactin-like protein E or F. The invention relates to methods, compositions, and kits which can be used for the in vitro or ex vivo expansion of hematopoietic precursor cells or for the treatment of a disorder associated with aberrant hematopoiesis, such as pre-eclampsia and thrombocytopenia.
