Title: | Neuroepithelial stem cells and glial-restricted intermediate precursors | Inventors: | Rao, Mahendra S.; Salt Lake City, UT, USA
Mayer-Proschel, Margot; Sandy, UT, USA | Summary: | Described herein are mammalian neuroepithelial stem cells and glial restricted precursor cells which are capable of self-renewal and differentiation into central nervous system cells. The invention relates to multipotent neuroepithelial stem cells and lineage-restricted oligodendrocyte-astrocyte precursor cells resulting from a homogeneous population of neuroepithelial stem cells derived from the neural tube of a rat embryo. The neuroepithelial stem cells are described as being capable of self-renewal and of differentiation into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes. By comparison, the oligodendrocyte-astrocyte precursor cells are derived from neuroepithelial stem cells and are capable of self-renewal and differentiation into oligodendrocytes and astrocytes, but not neurons. Further disclosed are methods of generating, isolating, and culturing such neuroepithelial stem cells and oligodendrocyte-astrocyte precursor cells. | Abstract: | Multipotent neuroepithelial stem cells and lineage-restricted oligodendrocyte-astrocyte precursor cells are described.
