Stem Cell Related Patent Number US6368854

Title:Hypoxia mediated neurogenesis
Inventors:Weiss, Samuel; Calgary, Canada
Summary:Described herein are methods of producing neurons from a population of neural cells containing at least one multipotent stem cell. The invention relates to methods by which multipotent neurons or neuronal progenitor cells are proliferated in the presence of growth factors and erythropoietin which induces the generation of neuronal progenitor cells and which may be exogenously applied. Further disclosed are methods by which the cells can be subjected to hypoxic insult in order to induce the expression of erythropoietin. Therapeutic applications for transplantation in the treatment of neurological diseases are included.
Abstract:Methods are described for the production of neurons or neuronal progenitor cells. Multipotent neural stem cells are proliferated in the presence of growth factors and erythropoietin which induces the generation of neuronal progenitor cells. The erythropoietin may be exogenously applied to the multipotent neural stem cells, or alternatively, the cells can be subjected to hypoxic insult which induces the cells to express erythropoietin.
