The invention relates to methods of mobilizing hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow to the peripheral circulation via the administration to a mammalian subject of an effective amount of mature, modified or multimeric forms of KC, grobeta, groalpha, or grogamma. The modified chemokines are described as consisting of amino acids 5 to 73 of SEQ ID NO: 3 wherein the amino acid number 69 has been deamidated to aspartic acid or isoaspartic acid. Further disclosed is a multimeric chemokine comprising an aggregation of two or more desamino gro-? proteins.
