Summary:Described herein are modified chemokines and their use in the mobilization of hematopoietic stem cells. The invention relates to methods of mobilizing hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow to the peripheral circulation via the administration to a mammalian subject of an effective amount of mature, modified or multimeric forms of KC, grobeta, groalpha, or grogamma. The modified chemokines are described as consisting of amino acids 5 to 73 of SEQ ID NO: 3 wherein the amino acid number 69 has been deamidated to aspartic acid or isoaspartic acid. Further disclosed is a multimeric chemokine comprising an aggregation of two or more desamino gro-? proteins. Therapeutic applications in cell transplants are included.
