Title:Method to distinguish hematopoietic progenitor cells
Inventors:Olweus, Johanna; Fremont, CA, USA
Summary:This invention describes a novel method of identifying hematopoietic progenitor cell populations. The method relates to fluorescent labeling of the cells with markers for CD34 and CD38 as well as with markers for cell adhesion molecules and growth factor receptors, and then detecting the cells by flow cytometry. Central to the invention is the discovery that certain changes in the expression of various cell adhesion molecules and growth factor receptors on human progenitor cells (such as CD34+ /CD38+) were found to correlate with the progression of the cell from nonlineage-committed to lineage-committed. Further described are methods by which flow cytometry is employed in conjunction with one or more such cellular markers to identify and isolate each of the different progenitor cell populations.
