Stem Cell Related Patent Number US6596690

Title:Vasostatin as marrow protectant
Inventors:Tosato, Giovanna; Bethesda, MD, USA
Summary:Described herein are methods of inhibiting endothelial cell growth and angiogenesis via the use of calreticulin. The invention relates to specific fragments of vasostatin, and to a process of stimulating the proliferation or survival of a hematopoietic cell exposed either to a chemotherapeutic agent or to irradiation. Further disclosed is a method of stimulating the proliferation or survival of hematopoietic cells with a fragment of vasostatin in the presence of a growth factor. Various embodiments of the invention are provided, as are therapeutic applications in the suppression of tumor growth, and in the protection of bone marrow cells in a subject treated with a chemotherapeutic agent or suffering from radiation toxicity.
Abstract:Specific fragments of vasostatin are disclosed. Also disclosed is a method of stimulating the proliferation or survival of a hematopoietic cell exposed to a chemotherapeutic agent or irradiation using these fragments. A method of stimulating the proliferation or survival of a hematopoietic cell is also disclosed. In one embodiment, the method is disclosed for stimulating the growth or survival of a hematopoietic stem cell with a fragment of vasostatin, in the presence of a growth factor.
