Summary:Described herein are methods of mobilizing mammalian stem and progenitor cells using a nicotine receptor agonist. The invention relates to methods of recruitment of bone marrow-derived stem cells such as endothelial cell precursors and hematopoietic stem cells, via the administration of nicotine or another nicotine receptor agonist such as a nicotine salt, a nicotine metabolite or a derivative thereof. Therapeutic applications are included, such as in the treatment of neutropenia.
Abstract:The present invention features methods for recruitment of bone marrow-derived stem cells (e.g., endothelial cell precursors, hematopoietic stem cells) by administration of nicotine or other nicotine receptor agonist. The methods of the invention can be used in, for example, treatment of conditions amenable to treatment by recruitment of bone marrow-derived stem cells (e.g., neutropenia).
