Summary:Described herein is a composition for producing cartilage, comprising human mesenchymal stem cells in an alginate gel layer which supports the differentiation and maturation of human mesenchymal stem cells into chondrocytes and hyaluronic acid, and wherein the mesenchymal stem cells in the gel layer have been contacted with a chondroinductive agent. The invention further relates to a composition of chemically defined components which support in vitro and in vivo chondrogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells. Further disclosed are the associated methods of in vitro and in vivo chondrogenic induction of such stem cells, as well as the means by which human chondrocytes are formed from such cells.
