The invention relates to the means by which hematopoietic cell survival is increased and the side effects of chemotherapy are reduced or prevented. Further disclosed are techniques for mobilizing hematopoietic progenitor cells from bone marrow into peripheral blood following chemotherapy, such that effective amounts are included of angiotensinogen, angiotensin I (AI), AI analogues, AI fragments and analogues thereof, angiotensin II (AII), AII analogues. AII fragments or analogues thereof or AII AT2 type 2 receptor agonists. Claims of the invention include a reduction in the frequency and severity of side effects, via the administration to a human chemotherapy patient of an amount of at least one active agent comprising a sequence consisting of at least five contiguous amino acids from known groups and formulae.
