Inventors:Jensen, Gitte S.; Port Dover, Ontario, Canada
N0A 1N4 Drapeau, Christian; Keno, OR, USA
Summary:This invention describes a method of enhancing CD34+ stem cell trafficking or homing in a subject via the administration of an amount of an Aphanizomenon species of blue-green algae or its component. Central to the invention is the discovery that the consumption of blue-green algae, or extracts thereof, enhances trafficking or the homing of stem cells in animals by inducing a transient increase in the population of stem cells present in the animal's circulatory system, whether the animals are healthy or diseased. Methods and materials are provided for the enhancement of CD34+ stem cell trafficking in a subject according to the consumption of the Aphanizomenon species or a component thereof.
Abstract:Consumption of blue-green algae, or extracts thereof, enhances trafficking or homing of stem cells in animals by inducing a transient increase in the population of stem cells present in the animal's circulatory system. The animal may be healthy or suffering some disease or physiological condition.
