Shafer, Alan Wayne; Lancaster, OH, USA | Summary: | Described herein are methods of using leptin to activate hematopoietic cells in the promotion of angiogenesis or vasculogenesis. The invention relates to methods of using various forms of a novel receptor expressed by hematopoietic and endothelial cells, a variant form of which has been detected in brain cells and shown to bind to the obese gene product, leptin. Methods are disclosed by which leptin may be used to stimulate the growth and development of receptor-positive hematopoietic and endothelial cells in vitro and in vivo. Also described are means by which the receptor is selectively expressed in hematopoietic progenitor cells with long-term repopulating potential, such that agents specifically binding to this receptor may be used to identify and isolate progenitor cells. Therapeutic applications are included, such as in the treatment of immunodeficiency and anemia or myeloid deficiency, via the administration of a therapeutic amount of leptin to a patient. | Abstract: | | US Patent Website: | Click Here for Full Text of Patent | Title Number: | US6838079 | Application Number: | US2002000095929 | Date Filed: | 12/03/2002 | Date Published: | 04/01/2005 | Assignee: | Indevus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Lexington, MA, USA |
