Stem Cell Related Patent Number US6841542

Title:Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-.beta.) blocking agent-treated stem cell composition and method
Inventors:Bartelmez, Stephen H.; Seattle, WA, USA
Iversen, Patrick L.; Corvallis, OR, USA
Summary:Described herein is a novel TGF-? blocking agent-treated HSC composition and methods of use. The invention relates to a method of decreasing the time of hematopoietic reconstitutiion of a patient following chemotherapy or radiation. Disclosed herein are TGF-? blocking agent-treated stem cells which are viable for an extended period of time in culture without replication or differentiation. Also provided are methods by which the cells are capable of long term hematopoietic reconstitution upon transfer to appropriate conditions. Therapeutic applications are included, such as in the treatment of various cancers such as ovarian cancer, melanoma, testicular cancer, lung cancer and brain cancer, and in the treatment of other non-malignant hematopoietic diseases such as thrombocytopenia.
Abstract:The invention relates to TGF-.beta. blocking agent-treated HSC compositions and methods comprising the same. The TGF-.beta. blocking agent-treated stem cells are viable for an extended time in culture without replication or differentiation and upon transfer to appropriate conditions are capable of long term hematopoietic reconstitution.
