Also provided are methods of repairing or producing cartilage via the implanting of a composition containing COMP and a differentiation agent, as well as methods for making an implant for cartilage repair via the binding of a differentiation agent to hCOMP. Methods of transplanting chondrocytes and mesenchymal stem cells are provided, in which such cells are cultured in the presence of hCOMP.
