Title:Fabrication of a cartilage implant
Inventors:Lai, Wen-Fu T.; Taipei, Taiwan Tang, Ja-Reng; Taipei, Taiwan Chen, Chien-Tsu; Taipei, Taiwan
Summary:This invention introduces a method of fabricating a cartilage implant by embedding and growing chondrocytes or mesenchymal stem cells in a three-dimensional substrate containing randomly rewound ?-helical monomers from type I collagen and from partially digested type II collagen. Further disclosed are methods by which the chrondrocytes or mesenchymal stem cells and the substrate are placed in a rotating and oscillating vessel during the growth stage. Therapeutic applications of such a cartilage implant are included, such as in the regeneration and replacement of damaged cartilage.
Abstract:A method of fabricating a cartilage implant including embedding and growing chondrocytes or mesenchymal stem cells in a three-dimensional substrate. The substrate contains randomly rewound α-helical monomers of type I collagen.
