Stem Cell Related Patent Number US6924142

Title:Hypoxia-mediated neurogenesis assay
Inventors:Weiss, Samuel; Calgary, Canada
Sorokan, S. Todd; Victoria, Canada
Summary:Described herein is a novel method of producing neurons and neuronal progenitor cells from a population of neural cells containing at least one multipotent stem cell. The invention relates to methods by which multipotent neural stem cells are proliferated in the presence of growth factors and erythropoietin which induces the generation of neuronal progenitor cells. Means are provided by which the erythropoietin may be exogenously applied to the multipotent neural stem cells, or alternatively, the cells can be subjected to hypoxic insult which induces the cells to express erythropoietin. Therapeutic applications are included such as in the screening of drugs or other agents for their effects on neuronal cells, and in the treatment of neurological diseases with transplantation.
Abstract:Methods are described for the production of neurons or neuronal progenitor cells. Multipotent neural stem cells are proliferated in the presence of growth factors and erythropoietin which induces the generation of neuronal progenitor cells. The erythropoietin may be exogenously applied to the multipotent neural stem cells, or alternatively, the cells can be subjected to hypoxic insult which induces the cells to express erythropoietin.
