The invention relates to methods by which cells of a selected lineage are generated from which a selectable marker, which is differentially expressed when compared with its expression in other cells, is introduced into a multipotent cell which is then cultured to induce differentiation into a cell of the selected lineage, or into a mixture of cells including cells of the selected lineage. Methods are further provided by which the multipotent cell is alternately cultured to induce preferential survival of cells of the selected lineage, such that those cells expressing the selectable marker are then selected.
