Title:Multiponent adult stem cells and methods for isolation
Inventors:Furcht, Leo T.; Minneapolis, MN, USA
Verfaillie, Catherine M.; St. Paul, MN, USA
Reyes, Morayma; Minneapolis, MN, USA
Summary:This invention describes isolated multipotent stem cells of non-embryonic origin that can be maintained in culture in the undifferentiated state or differentiated to form cells of multiple tissue types. Also provided are methods of isolation and culture, as well as therapeutic uses for the isolated cells. The invention relates to methods by which an isolated cell population derived from human bone marrow and co-expressing CD49c and CD90, with a doubling rate of approximately 36 hours, can be differentiated into multiple tissue types. Therapeutic applications in the repair of damaged tissue and in the treatment of cancer are provided.
Abstract:The invention provides isolated stem cells of non-embryonic origin that can be maintained in culture in the undifferentiated state or differentiated to form cells of multiple tissue types. Also provided are methods of isolation and culture, as well as therapeutic uses for the isolated cells.
