Inventors:Konkle, Jon; Durham, NC, USA
Gimble, Jeffrey M.; Baton Rouge, LA, USA
Summary:This invention describes a method of differentiating adipose stromal cells to chondrocytes, and uses thereof. Methods and compositions are described which are based on the use of adipose tissue-derived adult stem cells, using a medium comprised of a chondroinductive agent.. Further disclosed are properties of differentiation such that an isolated adipose tissue-derived adult stem cell differentiates to express at least one characteristic of a chondrocyte in combination with a viscous, biocompatible liquid material implanted into a host. Therapeutic applications are described in the clinical treatment and repair of articular cartilage fractures and defects.
Abstract:The invention provides cells, methods and compositions based upon the use of adipose tissue-derived adult stem cells in the repair of articular cartilage fractures or defects. The invention is useful in providing a treatment of articular cartilage fractures in a clinical setting.
